In Germany, the number of patients increased
Again sad news from Germany - a sharp jump in the number of cases of intestinal infection, the cause of which is enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli   (EHEC).

Physicians Institute. R. Koch reported that on June 1, has been registered 365 new cases   dangerous infection. In Hamburg alone, the number of cases for one day has increased by 119 persons, while the total number of patients was 668.

In Lower Saxony, according to experts, the number of patients increased by 30% and amounted to 344 people. In addition, just one day, and increased number of patients, with 47 to 68 sufferers hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) . The number of such patients has increased by 100 people and reached the mark in 470 patients.

In total, to date, the number of patients with confirmed or provisional diagnosis acute intestinal infections   more than 1,500 people. Earlier it was reported that German scientists have found a source of intestinal infection   in cucumbers imported from Spain. But after further analysis it was found that the strain of E. coli contained in cucumbers from Spain are not identical to the real "culprit" outbreak of infection - E.coli O104: H4. Researchers have to state the source of infection has not yet been found.

Against the background of deteriorating by the day of the epidemiological situation, the scientists hastily embarked on an unplanned clinical trials ekulizumaba   (Soliris), which is one of the expensive drugs used in the treatment of such infections. For example, in the US treatment with the drug for a period of one year, costing 409, 5000 dollars.

While in the framework of the tests, which included a large number of patients with HUS The company Alexion, ekulizumaba manufacturer, supplying the drug free of charge. It is reported that a large number of patients with hemolytic uremic syndrome significantly accelerate the process of obtaining government approval to use ekulizumaba in such cases.

As previously reported, Rospotrebnadzor appealed to citizens   with an appeal not to eat vegetables from Germany. But because of the growing threat of infection in Russia, came into effect a ban on the import of vegetables from Europe as long as there is no established true cause of the spread of an intestinal infection.
